Real-life Examples of Worldwide Spatial Data Infrastructures Shared Yesterday

Chief architect George Percivall with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) led a discussion yesterday afternoon on how spatial data infrastructure (SDI) technology is benefiting government agencies around the world. Joining Mr. Percivall were Peter Dvoracek with the Czech Republic Land Survey Office; Manuel Gallego with SITGA-Xunta de Galicia, Spain; and Arco Groothedde with Kadaster, Netherlands. Each gentleman provided real-life examples of how Intergraph SDI technology is being used in his area to further public geospatial collaboration and distribution and instill OGC standards. Government & Transportation Overview Highlights Industry Visions and Objectives

Italian Region of Veneto to Build SDI with Intergraph

The region of Veneto, Italy, will use Intergraph technology to create a centralized spatial data infrastructure (SDI) database to improve access to spatial data across the region and conform to standards such as INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe).

The project will consolidate and standardize multiple databases into one SDI geographic database, harmonizing and securing geospatial data exchange between Venetian government entities, businesses, and the public for improved collaboration and productivity and ease of maintenance and administration. SBB, Switzerland’s Biggest Travel and Transport Company, Selects Intergraph Technology to Manage Rail Assets

SBB will implement Intergraph next-generation infrastructure management technology to geospatially capture and manage assets for the Swiss railway, which supports the transport of 9,000 trains per day and 306 million passengers a year. With assets including more than 3,000 kilometers of rail, 5,200 buildings, and 28,000 employees – just to name a few – the project will result in the largest geographic information system (GIS) in the country.

Keeping track of and up-to-date on every asset that makes up such an extensive transportation network is a challenging proposition, according to SBB. The availability of current data that enables users to access key information at the right time, in the right form, and through the appropriate medium is becoming increasingly crucial for the operation of the railway.
